Job o’ the Day: Legal Campaign Director at Americans for Safe Access in Washington, DC

Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is the nation’s largest organization working to advance safe and legal access to cannabis (marijuana) for therapeutic uses and research. Using a multi-faceted strategy that incorporates public education, grassroots advocacy, direct lobbying, and impact litigation, ASA fights to compel the U.S. federal government to relax its anti-medical marijuana actions.

The Legal Campaign Director position is responsible for managing ASA’s Legal Campaign and its programs. The position is full-time and based out of ASA’s DC office (satellite and/or flex location a possibility for the right candidate). The position reports to the Executive Director.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

Outreach:

  1. Attend and speak at conferences in order to network and build a body of educated attorneys nationally
  2. Hold trainings for attorneys and patients
  3. Conduct media interviews on legal matters as needed
  4. Write and edit articles on legal matters for ASA publications
  5. Create Continuing Legal Education (CLE) training program
  6. Create and update legal manuals for all medical cannabis states
  7. Create and update “how to defend medical cannabis patients” manuals for all medical cannabis states

Support:

  1. Work with Chief Counsel to draft ASA legal positions
  2. Provide content for brief bank on our web site (motions to dismiss, etc.)
  3. Build and manage ASA’s legal advisory board
  4. Create and implement curriculum for attorneys
  5. Interface with campaign staff

Legal:

  1. Work with Chief Counsel to file amicus briefs and offer legal assistance in pending federal cases
  2. Advise MMJ defendants and attorneys
  3. Work with Chief Counsel to prepare and file civil suit
  4. Litigate key cases
