Position Overview

CJDC seeks a dynamic and talented Staff Attorney to help implement the juvenile defense and policy programs of the organization under the supervision of the Executive Director. This full-time salaried position with health benefits and paid vacation is based in Denver, Colorado, and has the potential for leadership advancement as the organization grows. Salary is based upon experience, starting at 55k. Periodic night and weekend work is required, as is occasional travel.

Job o’ the Day: Staff Attorney with the Bronx Defenders in New York

The Bronx Defenders is an innovative, progressive, holistic defense office in the South Bronx. They are currently seeking an energetic staff attorney with a commitment to social justice to fill an opening in its Civil Action Practice with an August start date.

  • The Civil Action Practice seeks a staff attorney to provide comprehensive advocacy and representation to help our clients resolve a broad range of civil legal problems such as eviction & barriers to housing, loss of employment licenses, criminal record errors, access to public and disability benefits, forfeiture of property and police misconduct.
  • The attorney will work collaboratively with criminal defense and family defense attorneys, advocates and social workers to assess client legal needs.
  • The attorney will represent individuals in a range of activities, including negotiations, administrative and judicial proceedings and trials, with a particular concentration in housing court, public benefits and forfeiture proceedings.
  • The attorneys also will be involved in community trainings and public education.

Job o’ the Day: Urban Justice Center – Community Development Project Transactional Legal Fellowship

This job is for our litigation-shy students out there. The Urban Justice Center’s Community Development Project is accepting applications for a 2013 Transactional Legal Fellow.

The Community Development Project strengthens the impact of grassroots organizations in New York City’s low-income and other excluded communities.  Currently, transactional legal services work includes land use, community benefits agreements, nonprofit law, corporate governance, federal income tax exemption, for-profit worker cooperative business structuring, and affordable housing.

Applicants with experience working with, in, or on behalf of community-based organizations are strongly encouraged to apply.  Applicants must either be admitted to the New York Bar, or sitting for the New York Bar not later than July 2014.  Applicants of color and applicants with foreign language abilities, particularly Spanish, are also encouraged to apply.

Job o’ the Day: Chief Assistant District Attorney with the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office in Canton, NY

This one’s for our more experienced public interest attorneys. The St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office, located in rural New York is currently accepting applications for a senior level position:

The St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an admitted attorney to fill a full time position as Chief Assistant District Attorney.

Duties would include training and supervision of six other attorneys, prosecuting felonies from case review thru trial, frequent court appearances, and outreach.

Duties would also include many and varied administrative responsibilities.

Candidates must be admitted to practice law in New York, have at least ten years of experience, at least five of which has been as a prosecutor. Candidates must have substantial criminal trial experience. Candidates must also possess strong research and writing skills, excellent organizational and time management skills, the ability to work cooperatively in a small office, a valid driver’s license and a cell phone.

Job o’ the Day: Entry-Level Staff Attorney with the Midwest Innocence Project in Kansas City, Missouri

According to the Midwest Innocence Project (MIP), recent studies conservatively estimate that between 2% and 5% of all inmates in America are falsely convicted. Some estimates reach up to 7%. In plain language, these stats mean that somewhere between 2,000 and 7,000 citizens in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas are locked away – sometimes for life – for crimes they did not commit.

MIP is a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to the investigation, litigation and exoneration of wrongfully convicted men and women in six states throughout the region. Founded a decade ago through the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law, MIP is a part of the National Innocence Network. Job o’ the Day: Seattle Law’s Center for Indian Law & Policy-Bristol Bay Native Association Fellowship

After a brief hiatus, PSJD’s Job o’ the Day is back! And it’s a good one.

If you’re a recent law graduate looking for an out-of-the-ordinary fellowship, this job’s for you! The Center for Indian Law & Policy at Seattle University School of Law has partnered up with the Bristol Bay Native Association (BBNA) to develop a project providing estate planning services to BBNA members in the remote Bristol Bay, Alaska area. The 9-month fellowship will begin in September 2013, and the Fellow will travel to villages with BBNA staff to meet with clients. The Fellow will receive supervision from Center personnel and an Alaska Legal Services attorney.
